Hardware Installation

Accudyno data acquisition system is a highly accurate measurement device. As such it should be installed in a place free from interference. We know that a dyno room naturally generates a lot of interference, but following certain guidelines can reduce the effect of interference.

The enclosure must be mounted close to the test stand. If the cable length of RPM1 allows it, it can be mounted next to the PC.

The most sensitive element of the installation is the USB cable, so we recommend that you always use a USB cable that is as short as possible (1.5m) and of excellent quality. A 3m USB cable is supplied which is usually sufficient for most cases. In case you need to connect over a longer distance, we recommend using an Amplified USB Cable or Powered USB Cable.

It is also important to keep the USB cable away from sources of interference, such as:

  • Power line cables that have switching, such as fans or pumps.
  • Power wires carrying power to solenoid valves or relays, such as the flywheel/roller brake valve.
  • 12V engine ignition wires or spark plug wires.

Grounding

It is important that both the PC and the test stand are connected to a ground copper rod installed for the test stand. The javelin should be driven in to the depth recommended by an electrician, typically 1.5m in wet ground. Although the PC may be connected to the general ground of the shop, it often has noise or interference from other equipment. As this is a precision laboratory element, it is recommended that it has its own ground.

Engine Interference

If you notice that the connection between the interface and the software is OK when the engine is stopped, but once the engine starts, connection is lost (the Connection button appears with a red cross), check the following:

  • Always work with EMI Supression spark plug cables and/or spark plug cap with resistor.
  • Keep PC and USB cables as far away from the engine as possible.
  • Check the spark plug. Change it and check again. Broken spark plugs can produce a lot of interference, even if the engine doesn´t fail.
  • Change the engine and check if the same problem occurs with another engine.
  • If the above does not work, it may be necessary to boost the USB signal with an amplified cable or with a USB Hub (purchased at computer stores).
